Star Wars: Boba Fett: A Practical Man

Karen Traviss
On the surface, it seems like just another routine contract for Boba Fett and his Mandalorian commandos, but the mystery client who hires them to start a small war is more dangerous than any of them can possibly imagine. When the Yuuzhan Vong invasion force sweeps into the galaxy, the Mandalorians find they’re on the wrong side–fighting for an alien culture that will bring about the end of their own.

Now Fett has to choose between his honor and the survival of his people. Since he’ s a practical man, he’s determined help the resistance beat the Yuuzhan Vong–even if it means working with a Jedi agent. Trouble is, no one trusts a man with Fett’ s reputation. So convincing the New Republic that they’re fighting on the same side is a tall order. Denounced as traitors, Fett’s Mandalorians need to stay one step ahead of their Yuuzhan Vong paymasters–and the Republic who sees them as collaborators with the most destructive enemy the galaxy has ever faced. . . .

Boba Fett is cool in this short story

This short book is another great example of the depth of the Star Wars universe of characters.  The author, Karen Traviss, does a great job of making Boba Fett and the Mandalorians interesting characters.

The Mandalorians are by nature bounty hunters that care about their next paycheck and don't care much who that paycheck comes from.  They serve as a third point of a triangle with Jedi and Sith as the other two points.

In this short book we learn that the bounty hunter philosophy doesn't always hold true regarding not caring about who their paycheck comes from.  Boba Fett and a few Mandalorians are hired by the Yuuzhan Vong, who are so alien and revolting that even Boba Fett and his crew are not willing to work for them.

But how do you go against a massive force that plans to take over the whole galaxy and has their own unique biological weapons and armor that may just allow them to accomplish it?  By leaking information to the Jedi while still working for the Yuuzhan Vong of course.

This short story ended too soon in that I wanted to keep reading and see how the whole story resolves itself.  I was never very interested in the Yuuzhan Vong because did anyone ever thing they would really succeed but Boba Fett and the Mandalorians are written as very interesting characters that you want to get to know better.

I rates this story 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for anyone looking for an enjoyable short sci fi story or wants to explore another part of the Star Wars universe beyond Jedi and Sith.
