In the ancient and mystical land of Muirwood, Lia has known only a life of servitude. Labeled a “wretched,” an outcast unwanted and unworthy of respect, Lia is forbidden to realize her dream to read or write. All but doomed, her days are spent toiling away as a kitchen slave under the charge of the Aldermaston, the Abbey’s watchful overseer. But when an injured squire named Colvin is abandoned at the kitchen’s doorstep, an opportunity arises. The nefarious Sheriff Almaguer soon starts a manhunt for Colvin, and Lia conspires to hide Colvin and change her fate. In the midst of a land torn by a treacherous war between a ruthless king and a rebel army, Lia finds herself on an ominous journey that will push her to wonder if her own hidden magic is enough to set things right. At once captivating, mysterious, and magic-infused, The Wretched of Muirwood takes the classic fantasy adventure and paints it with a story instantly epic, and yet, all its own.

Great new fantasy series with realistic middle ages situations
Sometimes I wonder if the best reviews are written a few weeks after reading (OK, I admit I listened to this book).
This book is in the fantasy genre but the characters come across as very realistic. The story is about a teenage girl, Lia, that finds herself hiding a recuperating young man (Colvin) in the abbey where she lives. She is a wretched which means she has no idea who her parents are and so she lives in the abbey working in the kitchen.
So the story starts out very intimate in a kitchen and her sleeping area where she hides the young man but quickly grows to an epic level. She finds herself escaping with the young man and in the middle of a major battle with the young man where his side is outnumbered and surrounded.
But the young girl continues to show strong magically abilities that are only inherited by parents who also have magically abilities.
I loved this story as it had some great characters and situations that were very realistic based on the middle ages. I give it five out of five stars and recommend it as a great new series for fantasy fans and I look forward to the next book in the series.
