Book # in Series
This first book in Veronica Roth's #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy is the novel the inspired the major motion picture starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. This dystopian series set in a futuristic Chicago has captured the hearts of millions of teen and adult readers.
Perfect for fans of the Hunger Games and Maze Runner series, Divergent and its sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant, are the gripping story of a dystopian world transformed by courage, self-sacrifice, and love. Fans of the Divergent movie will find the book packed with just as much emotional depth and exhilarating action as the film, all told in beautiful, rich language.
One choice can transform you. Beatrice Prior's society is divided into five factions—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice must choose between staying with her Abnegation family and transferring factions. Her choice will shock her community and herself. But the newly christened Tris also has a secret, one she's determined to keep hidden, because in this world, what makes you different makes you dangerous.

Divergent by Veronica Roth is popular because it is a great dystopian series

I read plenty of scifi books with some being from independent authors and other such as Divergent by Veronica Roth being a popular, mainstream book that has even been turned into a movie.  I often wonder if the book community somehow either looks down on mainstream books and authors or pumps them up more than they deserve to be.

I say all this because Divergent is a great series that stands well on it's own as a great fantasy/dystopian storyline.  I usually enjoy books about young lead characters just starting out their career.  I especially enjoyed reading Divergent about Tris, a young girl from a conservative, passive family background, take on the mental and physical challenges of joining the Dauntless, an aggressive, military-style group.  She is a very strong-willed woman who fights hard to fit in while also realizing she has unique abilities that allow her to concern her fears.  In a group like the Dauntless where being brave is the key desired characteristic desired Tris rises above the rest in her training while still finding close relationships with those around her.

If you haven't read Divergent yet give it a try.  Those that like young adult series, scifi, or dystopian worlds will find something they like.  I give it five out of five stars.
